This latest studio album from the South Korean vocalist Youn Sun Nah is marked by a new band – it was recorded in New York – and a slightly more focused song list. There are, for example, no forays into classical music as we heard on her previous ACT release, Lento. Producer and arranger Jamie Saft is a key presence, whether contributing old school Wurlitzer piano to his own ‘Too Late’ (co-written with his wife, Vanessa Saft) or supplying the churchy Hammond Organ backdrop to the Paul Simon title track. The singer really shines on the more overtly folk-derived material, notably ‘The Dawnbreaker’ (from Joni Mitchell's 1968 debut album Song to a Seagull) and ‘A Sailor's Life’. The latter opens like an outtake from Miles's In a Silent Way, with Saft's rippling Fender Rhodes opening up a vast, oceanic space. While not quite as epic as the 11-minute Fairport Convention version on which it's based, it's by far the album's longest (and most impressive) cut, and the one which elicits the most impassioned performance from the singer.
