Guitarist Jacob Young has two albums under his own name and one with Manu Katche on the ECM label, Vespestad has for some years been an essential cog in Tord Gustavsen's wheel while British ex-pat Roy Powell has been active on the Oslo jazz scene for some while. Interstatic is their second album, following 2011's Anthem and continues their explorations into ambient sounds, full of noir-ish undertones and dark-side-of-the moon musings. Their ability to set up a series of moods is occasionally undone by a certain impatience that suggests a diversity of influences that have not yet been fully reconciled, of trying to cram more into the music than it actually demands. Some of the most successful tracks such as ‘Stills’ hold on to a mood and sustains it with minimal inner detail; perhaps what is missing is a central vision.
