What with the ‘world music’ label having outlived its usefulness, and Youssou N'Dour now a household name, it's easy to forget the impact the Senegalese singer first made on the West, as support act for Peter Gabriel in 1987. This previously unreleased live recording from Athens, taken at the end of a gruelling world tour, captures an artist revelling in his god-given tenor, in the ability of his band to surprise and delight. The pounding mbalax rhythms deployed by horns, electric guitars and percussion including cylindrical sabar drums and the tama talking drum, an instrument wedged under an armpit and beaten with a stick, gave life and authenticity to songs including the upbeat crowd pleaser ‘Ndobine’ and the rollicking ‘Kocc Barma’. No matter, really, that N'Dour's lyrics – about migration, African identity and the peace- loving Mouride belief system – were sung in Wolof. The crowd is witnessing the birth of a superstar, and knows it.
