When, in 1962, Zoot Sims became the first American musician to officially appear at Ronnie Scott's club it wasn't in any way a random choice by the proprietor. It was a dream come true. For of all Pres-inspired hornmen, Zoot Sims was quite probably the most consistent. Be it with the Four Brothers, Kenton, Mulligan's Sextet and CJB, teamed with life long friend Al Cohn, or soloing with local rhythm sections, Zoot was a good humoured, full-toned swinger who always brought something special to the party. It was said of Zoot that he never liked to see a rhythm section go unemployed. This observation being exemplified here where he's found fronting a local trio one summer's evening in Louisville, Kentucky. Zoot immediately eases himself into a spirited blues before tackling four familiar standards – ‘That Old Feeling’, ‘Willow Weep For Me’, ‘I'll Remember April’ and finally ‘Come Rain Or Come Shine’ with his usual panache. Sensing that they're in the presence of greatness, the local lads give of their best and, as to be expected, Zoot reciprocates in kind.
