Done on one of Ibrahim's return visits to Copenhagen's Montmartre, where the Dollar Brand Trio had been recorded for Fontana/Black Lion/Freedom nearly five years earlier, this is a continuous performance of LP length (its vinyl reissue was noted in Jazzwise 184). Beginning with a long ‘Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro’ and ending with the then-inevitable ‘Tintiyana’, there's a lot of funky energy mixed with the occasional more avantgarde touches. Though there are some lyrical moments, this is far from the more pastoral Ibrahim of recent years. The piano sound has a full but rather harsh quality, having first appeared on Spectator, a miniscule Danish label, and only later being reissued by the ECM subsidiary JAPO (which, according to Grove, covered “recordings that fell outside ECM's house sound” – you can say that again). As a souvenir of the pianist's earlier European stint, and his stimulating mix of influences, this has a lot going for it musically.
