Recorded and filmed last summer, at the home of Fazioli pianos in northern Italy, this is a tantalising rather than wholly satisfying experience. The 40-minute CD is rather bitty with its 17 tracks, some under a minute long and a couple ending abruptly and perhaps artificially. The playing, apart from the opening and closing soprano tracks, is more consistent and more compelling than on Ibrahim's last new recording (see Jazzwise 182) and the mix of older tunes and improvised segments finds the latter especially sounding very Ellingtonian. The longer DVD has completely different material done with the same, very resonant piano and sees Ibrahim explaining the background to some of his classics, especially ‘Mannenberg’, before playing a continuous 18-minute set for a genteel audience in a small concert-hall. The frequently compelling talk and playing here actually makes for a better programme than the CD, and will be especially meaningful to Ibrahim fans.
