First thing to notice is that you may have part of this recording already, if you bought one version of the Jamal album Blue Moon (reviewed in Jazzwise 160 and then showing in our Top 20 Albums for 2012).
Its so-called Collector's Edition comprised the nine-track studio album recorded in October 2011, along with a 63-minute DVD of eight of those tracks as performed live in Paris on 27 June 2012, i.e. the same performance that comprises more than half of this package. The difference lies in the 43 minutes of its second CD, which begins with almost half-an-hour of Lateef and the same rhythm-section, starting with deliberately fragmentary tenor over the two percussionists, then proceeding to fragmentary flute with Jamal back at the keys, and ending with Yusef singing a gospel song and a blues (‘Trouble In Mind’, credited to Cannonball!) Ahmad then wraps up with a reprise of ‘Blue Moon’ and a reprise of ‘Poinciana’ which, instead of N'Orleanian drummers Vernel Fournier or Idris Muhammad, highlights the crucial contribution throughout of N'Orleanian drummer Herlin Riley. Lateef fans might want this for his last recording, while Jamal fans may not need more of the same.
