Both the esteemed Brian Priestley and Yours Truly have exhaustively covered this material in these pages to where it's now frantically waving a white flag. This isn't indicative of a criticism of this attractive material just that enough is enough. This latest 5CD package covers everything from the two million-plus selling albums But Not For Me – Live At The Pershing Lounge (1958), through to Live At The Blackhawk (1962) plus a few extras. Jamal's phenomenal success was arrived at via his ability to deliver a repertoire that embraced show tunes (‘The Surrey With The Fringe On Top’) Hollywood hits (‘Secret Love’), familiar standards (‘Angel Eyes’). Bebop chestnuts (‘Woody 'n You’), the occasional jukebox confection (‘Music! Music! Music!’), plus an original or two (‘Rhumba No.2’). All this was performed with a highly personalised judicious use of time and space that not just attracted the widest possible listening audience but also had a profound influence on Miles Davis to the extent where he incorporated a number of Jamal's treatments into his very own set list.
