What with all the misery going on in the world, it's heartening to see the concept of joy being presented as a form of rebellion. South London's Ezra Collective have done so with their debut, and now this epic trio of virtuosos – guitarist Forcione, kora maestro Keita and percussionist Adewale – spread their own brand of musical rapture, the product of a three-way friendship nurtured via previous collaborations, music as the universal language and, we're told, various cooking sessions and football games over the years. There's no doubting the jazz credentials of each: Italian Forcione has over 20 albums and guest slots with the likes of Charlie Haden and Trilok Gurtu on his CV; Adewale, London-based, from Sao Paolo, has worked with Bobby McFerrin; but it is the Senegalese Keita – lauded for his current touring project with Cuban pianist Omar Sosa – who feels the most experimental and free, wielding the 22 strings of his kora harp lute with sensitivity and smarts through 10 compelling originals. Title-track and opener, a co-write, sets the celebratory but never saccharine tone, with each musician asserting their chops between intertwining with easy synergy; tunes dedicated to longing for home and the hope that love blooms after heartbreak are as melodically crisp as they are propulsive and spacious. The Adewale-composed ‘Beautiful Game’ is a percussive ode to a Brazilian obsession, with notes and melodies passed from guitar to kora, and formidable percussion full of flicks and tricks.
