The directive to ‘file under dub-jazz’ makes the premise of this work clear enough, but further dedications to the likes of Nick Manassah, Aba Shant-i and Jah Shakka highlight the inspiration of the UK's sound system scene alongside its Jamaican models. Producer-composer-arranger-engineer Mikolaj Gorecki has put those influences to largely good effect within the context of a live band whose acoustic, horn-led textures go deep into the historical soil of Jamaican music, with its timeless harvests of The Skatalites, McCook etc. Gorecki has chosen and deployed his collaborators wisely, and as befits the elliptical, echo chamber nature of dub there is a considerable amount of space and subtraction in the music. At their most interesting, the arrangements slide some of the waning motifs of the swing era into view, underlining, either by accident or design, the enormous impact that the likes of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway had on West Indian musicians decades ago. On occasion the writing runs out of steam, and could have benefitted from just a few more hard edges – tougher attack on the piano's offbeat; sharper spring on the snare drum; greater use of contrasting solo statements by the brass and reeds – to lift the material to the level of what is proper talawah. A palatable listen nonetheless, and Gorecki has done well to capture the essence of a specific form of music that is not at all easy to perform or engineer so as to highlight its finesse. He has shown he fully understands where dub-jazz comes from. It remains to be seen where he takes it next.
