Aki Rissanen's trio is one of the major exhibits of Finnish jazz and is surely deserving to break through in a big way on the European jazz circuit sometime soon. This might be the album to do it. In his liner notes, Rissanen speaks of his love of electronic music and in Mäkynen he has one of Finland's experts who, away from his jazz work, is the producer Teddy Rok, who a few years ago was creating electronic music as the Teddy Rok Seven. To an extent electronic music involves a high degree of repetition, which is felt in the bassline of Aeropeans', which is seamlessly integrated with Bach-like figures as Rissanen allows his classical roots to emerge along with his jazz inclinations, such as his signature side-slipping into other keys to keep the listener honest – what was that, what happened then? The juxtaposition of all these elements in Rissanen's music does not sound forced or awkwardly juxtaposed, but emerge as a musical language the trio have been quietly evolving through Amorandom (2016) and Another North (2017). Yet, there's quite a jump from Another North to Art in Motion, evidence of artistic growth, yes, but also of a growing confidence in both concept and execution.
