Happily, this reached me just a couple of weeks before the chance to see Broadbent in person and it sheds new light on the accomplished pianist whom I heard recently and, indeed, on the trio album Live At Giannelli Square Vol.2 (reviewed in Jazzwise 168). In one way, it's a continuation of the writer-arranger who joined the Woody Herman band at age 22, straight out of Berklee (he's now 67), and one piece here (‘Love In Silent Amber’) is from that period, while the newer material includes one called ‘Woody N' Me’. A great plus is that Broadbent manages to obtain original sounds from the band without being too obviously hip (“I have an aversion to being clever,” he writes), and while often remaining within apparently conventional frameworks. The results, however, transcend the framework, and even the almost recognisable title-anthem convinces. The soloists are relatively average, apart from tenorman Lauer and Broadbent's own piano.
