Best known perhaps as the pianist of Charlie Haden's Quartet West, Broadbent emerged from New Zealand to study at Berklee and become a successful performer-arranger. Though not short on technique, he seems to operate more in terms of textures, some of them familiar from Evans, Tristano and even Shearing. The sound of someone thinking out loud can be quite captivating, although the long opening track (Jerome Kern's ‘Yesterdays’) doesn't seem to take off as well as the others. Bassist Smith putters along admirably, but is impressive playing the melody of Broadbent's slow waltz ‘Wandering Road’ and closing the track unaccompanied, while the attentive audience holds its breath. Among other originals, ‘Three For All’ is an up-tempo improv on ‘Just Friends’, while ‘Sing A Song Of Dameron’ is a lyrical ballad. Broadbent has the fresh approach of a veteran who has nothing to prove, and is content to take his time demonstrating it.
