This is an interesting and creative journey into post-bopland. Although the publicity notes that accompany this release suggest influences such as Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano and Miles Davis, the result is closer to jazz from 1950s California West Coast (which similarly drew on such influences).
The intriguingly written heads, balanced with cool, understated yet well crafted solos – exemplified by the title track- make an interesting contrast to many current post-bop albums that look over their shoulders to events, past and present, on the east coast of America. The striking aspect of this album is that throughout, the clarity of thought and expression in each of the front line players work – Claret, Clegg and Eagles -which remains calm but highly jazz literate – for example, ‘Mind Block, ‘Stella by Artois’ (what a great title!) and ‘Get Al In Town’ – that suggests great promise for the future.
