But is it jazz? "This is dance music," announces the note accompanying the title track of Oscillate, the third album from Australian drummer and bandleader Alex Flood. It’s certainly quite a challenge to listen to the six tracks and not find yourself being moved first and foremost by the different beats and rhythms provided by Flood, from the shuffling broken beats on that opening title track, via the jungle and drum ‘n‘ bass inspirations of ‘U R THA 1’ and the percussive elaborations of ‘Berlin’ (‘one… for the House heads’), through to the funky groove of closer ‘Hüpf’, which means ‘bounce’ in German, appropriately for a track said to have been ‘written to make your head bounce’. Recorded in mid-July 2022 at Jazzanova Studios in Berlin, the album features fine lyrical and trancy jazz flute from Brazilian musician Paulo Cedraz, sonorous synth work from Hungarian keyboard player Àbáse, and infectiously funky bass from Flood’s fellow Australian Horatio Luna. So, is it jazz? Dance jazz, perhaps – play it back to back with some Glenn Miller and marvel at the changes a century has wrought.
