The veteran straightahead NYC-based trumpeter Alex Norris has spent most of his career on the sidelines so this is only his third recording as leader with a quintet that have been together a decade; for it he goes back to his central inspiration paying homage to the hard bop era but it’s too well-mannered to recapture any of the excess and wit of that period.
