Live albums are often a practical, more affordable release option for artists, which is understandable given the high costs associated with studio recordings. However, there’s something special about a grand piano sounding in a concert hall which sets it apart from their studio counterparts.
With Recurring, the addition of strings by the Amika Quartet is a cherry on top of a sonically sublime cake. And what of the music? There’s an emphasis on mood and groove over melody, in true Alfa Mist style. ‘Yellow Tie’ is a dreamy, pedal-soaked solo passage of under two minutes, while ‘Decay’ is darker and more interactive, featuring long-time collaborator Kaya Thomas-Dyke with octave pedal on her bass. Most of the album is instrumental, but there are brief vocal moments; ‘Checkpoint (Violence)’ deserves a mention. Structured around the repeated refrain "violence, violence", Mist delivers line after matter-of-fact line, a sharp condemnation of government actions and a lament for the lives of migrants lost.
