Trumpetersinger ElSaffar's exploration of the hypnotic modes or maquam of Iraq through the compass of jazz continues to produce thrilling results, as this new offering resoundingly maintains the high standard set by 2011's Inana and 2007's Two Rivers. Written after the leader spent a year in both Egypt and Lebanon and also deeply engaged with the recent history of Iraq and the Middle East in general, the music has, as is to be expected, far-reaching emotional and political resonances, but the real triumph is its immediacy, if not danceability in addition to its symbolism. The highpoint of this prowess is ‘Flyover Iraq’, a swirling anthem whose 15/4 groove is handled with disarming ease by drummer Nasheet Waits who throws down an array of funky fills that enhance rather than disrupt the song's fine rotation. It is here that the leader takes one of his most inspired solos on the whole disc, reaching a heated climax by way of slaloming and stuttered phrases that are well complemented by the wiry flurries of Zafer Tawil's oud. Although there is much to be admired In the microtonal and metric trickery of this work – the time shifts repeatedly on several compositions – ElSaffar's great achievement is his ability to make all of his billowing themes and rhythmic whimsy retain a deep imprint of folk music, albeit with something of a jagged edge. A vital bridge of two complex cultures, a metaphorical roadmap for elected leaders.
