How the various strands of 20th century jazz and popular music history may entwine in the 21st remains a mystery. Thirty-year-old Kidambi provides a worthwhile illumination through this ambitious and articulate music that centres on the deep meditative energy that can be induced by the harmonium and voice, but also seamlessly moves into free improvisation without compromising its emotional core. Raised in a South Indian family in San Jose, California Kidambi has drawn on the heritage of fellow west coaster Alice Coltrane as well as the experimental end of classical music and created a language that is deeply devotional, using the drone as an unerring hypnosis that is also fraught with the kind of ‘Battle At Armageddon’ intensity, if not violence, that informed her role model. Kidambi has established a relationship between her wordless singing and Nelson's soprano saxophone that gives the performance real timbral richness, as the two instruments often drift in and out of one another, but the Jaffe-Lopez drums and bass axis is also skillfully deployed. Impressive debut from a newcomer whose future progress should be interesting to behold.
