The line-up is an exciting one: the ferociously virtuosic NY-based trumpeter Peter Evans, perhaps best known for his role in anarchic parody ensemble Mostly Other People Do the Killing, and two of the most stand-out young musicians in Germany: the highly touted drummer Christian Lillinger and the young John Zorn-influenced saxophonist Wanja Slavin. Swedish double-bassist Petter Eldh, who's familiar to UK audiences through his work with Django Bates' Beloved Bird trio, completes the line-up. Amok Amor have an intensely collective approach. Their exhilarating outbursts of edgy angular rhythms in near-unison provide the framework for freewheeling solo sprints or stuttering contrapuntal interventions, mostly in the form of manic, agitated conversations between saxophonist Slavin and trumpeter Evans. The compositions sometimes have themes not unlike those of Ornette Coleman, but there are also underlying hints of African and gamelan ritualistic rhythms underpinning the grooves. It's edge-of-the-seat stuff at the raw end of downtown jazz sophistication.
