The bulk of this album covers the first seven tracks recorded by a septet featuring Branford Marsalis, with the remaining tracks recorded on two occasions, spread out much later in two bursts of activity. These latter cuts introduce new, more chamberlike instrumentation, and then the album ultimately filters down to a piano duo of Jaffe and McClung. The leader, a less starry name than several of his sidemen, wrote and composed all the tunes, and with artwork indicating the Empire State Building and titles indicating a homage to both New York and jazz heroes (a blues for Cannonball) the album has a scamperingly fast but generic bebop feel to it. You'd almost swear you're in the Big Apple, but this album wouldn't necessarily make you wish you were there.
