Ms Lightly has hired some highly able musicians and evidently has the wherewithal to release a debut double CD in a smart digipak format. All in all, quite a courageous gesture for a newcomer, you might say. She opens with Chick Corea's ‘High Wire’, this taken at quite a lick, the vocal animated yet disappointingly slight, the rhythm forceful and energetic, and the very classy alto of Simkins featured. Thereafter, she handles a series of jazz classics and originals, 19 in all, some quite challenging in themselves, and I have to say the overall effect is promising not to say brave, but some way from the real thing, her phrasing tentative and lacking assurance. Her sound is pure but small, and there's little sense of real jazz feeling or swing. I sense that she lacks experience, the kind that involves learning your trade on multiple bandstands, of matching your talent regularly alongside jazz musicians of this quality. Candidly, the stars are for her musicians whose playing, especially that of Kendon, Simkins and Bassey, is first-rate.
