It’s curious to reflect that there’s been a four-year gap since Law’s last album when he’s so ubiquitous, notably in his work with Tim Garland. The saxophonist guests here on soprano, illuminating a gentle, melodic waltz, which is not the vibe you readily associate with Law’s intense, even intellectual knottiness. He can of course rock out, and the opening ‘Movies’ builds to a distortion drenched series of chromatic runs that evoke the spirit of Allan Holdsworth. By contrast, ‘Searching’ is an enigmatically spacious meditation with echoing piano and lyrical sax from long-time associate Chillingworth. Law seems more willing to include wider influences – Asaf Sirkis lays down a konnakol intro to the jagged rhythms of ‘Laurvin Glaslowe’, while the dreamy, sentimental musing of ‘Pure Imagination’ has shades of John Martyn to it – and this reflects his musical journey of the last decade. It’s also led to Life I Know being by far his most accessible release to date, and easily his most mature and confident.
