The guitarist Ant Law studied physics (at Edinburgh Uni) as well as music (at Berklee) to a very high level and this combination could partly explain why he's the man behind a pioneering alternative ‘Perfect Fourth’ interval tuning system for guitars. This marriage of science and art goes into the quintet's second album, Zero Sum World, the follow up to 2013's well-received debut Entanglement. Along the way we hear a few post-M-Base-ish metric twists, a funky revamp of a South Indian cyclical rhythmic etude as well as more ambient, jangly folk-rock guitar moments, especially a track that pays tribute to and reflects the music of his former tutor and mentor, the New York-based guitarist Ben Monder. Law prefers a soft-focus tone on his guitar to the rawer edge of most of his young contemporaries. Strong support comes from pianist Ivo Neame (replacing John Turville from the previous recording), saxophonist Michael Chillingworth and a top-notch young British rhythm section in bassist Tom Farmer and drummer James Maddren. It's not though easy music to get to grips with for the listener, and the band can at times sound a little bogged down by Law's structurally sophisticated compositions, even if they aren't lacking in colour or imagination.
