Trumpeter Jaimie Branch is a rising star on the experimental scene. FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise was one of my favourite albums of 2019. Her duo project, Anteloper, a collaboration with drummer Jason Nazary, is equally exciting. This four-track ‘mixtape’, the follow-up to their 2018 debut, Kudu, was recorded during a month-long residency at Pioneer Works cultural centre near Branch's home in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

It's an immersive listen full of mind-expanding soundscapes, heavy grooves and bold trumpet statements that more than live up to fellow trumpeter and sonic adventurer Rob Mazurek's poetic liner notes: “Screaming planets forlorn… new informal districts of time and energy…” It's the kind of album that conjures images in your head. The opener ‘Bubble Under’ is a little bit clubby, a little bit electric Miles and a little bit like standing in a cave full of geodes. On ‘Isotope 420°’ it's as if the duo are caught in a tropical rainstorm: everything is dripping and there's a remarkable sound, like the manipulated purr of a big cat; while ‘RADAR Radio’ opens with a heavily distorted sample of Latino pop, becoming rawer and more acoustic with shuffling drums and acerbic trumpet. Best of all is the prickly psychedelia of ‘Soledad Saboteur’. Listening to its trippy backdrop (the sound of a million tiny bubbles bursting) is like spooning Rice Krispies into your ears. You hear a baby (Young Solé on guest vocals, according to the sleeve) and then gorgeous trumpet harmonies that seem to be soothing her cries. This is strange, beautiful and brilliantly creative music. I can't wait to hear more.
