With irresistibly catchy hooks and plenty of textural ear candy, Me And My Radio will satisfy even the most sweet-toothed listeners. Traversing everything from jazz and blues to soul and pop, Anthony Strong's personal mixtape illustrates his unerring skill at reinventing standards – not least an ingenious ‘Anything Goes’ – and more contemporary material such as the yearning album opener ‘You To Me Are Everything’. You'd be forgiven for thinking that it would be impossible to say anything fresh about ‘I Can't Give You Anything But Love’, one of the most popular of all standards, but even here Strong finds fresh things to say, aided by a beautiful string arrangement by Callum Au. The familiar Oliver! torch song ‘As Long As She Needs Me’ is beautifully orchestrated here by Guy Barker, starting in the key of B flat before modulating ever higher to close in a glowing D major. Strong is assisted throughout by a big band whose artistry and flawless delivery lifts the dots off the page in a way that compels attention, with tip-top tenor work from Igor Butman on ‘Ain't Misbehavin’, fine clarinet playing from Simon Marsh on a song penned by Strong and long-time collaborator, Guy Mathers, ‘On A Marché Sur La Lune’, plus a warm, lustrous string section led by Thomas Gould.
