One of the great bass players in jazz and a pillar of the contemporary Norwegian jazz scene, it's wholly fitting that he should be chosen to figure in Jazzthing's ‘European Jazz Legends’ series. The idea is to give each legend a concert, which is recorded by the Intuition record label and broadcast by WDR, the West German radio station, and supported by a feature in Jazzthing. This concert, recorded in April this year, initially presents a solo exposition of Andersen's great talent using electronics and loops and then gradually allows more space for Lien, who demonstrates what an exemplary pianist he is becoming. Very often playing under the aegis of a ‘name’ musician seems to bring focus to the playing of younger musicians that is not so readily apparent in their own work. That seems to be the case here, where, on his best behaviour, his focus and invention exceeds his work on the Ozella label, and provides convincing evidence that he has grown enough in stature to be considered a young master. The track designations on the album sleeve do not seem to match those on the CD, but whether it be slower or brighter tempos this album is a true celebration of Andersen's mastery.
