For those new to the magic that is The Jazz Messengers, this is a worthwhile 2-CD/19-track primer, offering brief cameos of most line-ups and their appropriate repertoire highlights. So, having feasted on such hard bop delights as ‘Doodlin’’, ‘The Preacher’, ‘Nica's Dream’, ‘A Night In Tunisia’. ‘Along Came Betty’, ‘Whisper Not’, ‘Blues March’, ‘Moanin’’ and ‘Lester Left Town’, make your selection then and seek out the original albums which are listed in the accompanying booklet. The Impulse session was the last to include Morgan and Timmons and the first to introduce a third front line horn – in this instance Curtis Fuller trombone top gun who contributes the only original. Meanwhile, Sonny Stitt is the sole horn on the often overlooked A Jazz Message and with McCoy Tyner and Art Davis bookending Blakey it should be investigated.
