McLaughlin fans will be intrigued to hear how Barot, who's clattered spectacularly behind Johnny Mac for years now, shapes up behind Hellborg's prodigious bass. Hellborg's explored this power trio concept for some time, but with Eklundh this band more openly embraces raga-like concepts. Just two tracks, each exceeding 30 minutes, fill the entire album. That may try the patience of some, but it's worth the effort, as each song ebbs and flows with more dynamic grace than Hellborg has revealed in previous collaborations with, say, Shawn Lane. True, there's often precious little space in the music, notably on the freaktastic opener ‘The Swami On Park Street’. But, despite its title, ‘Bacchic Frenzy’ has a more laid back groove. The music is more composed than it at first appears: separate sessions have been pieced together over the years, with Hellborg re-recording his bass parts, providing a welcome coherence. The results are not necessarily ‘Indian’, but the combination of improvisation, Indian-esque tonalities, in-studio composition and the sheer passion of the power-play makes The Jazz Raj hard to ignore.
