“There were at least two instances in which I literally had to hide in the bathroom to cry,” say Chucho Valdés of this recording celebrating the music of two legendary Cuban bandleaders, Bebo Valdés and Chico O'Farrill. That the experience should have proved so emotionally overwhelming for Chucho stems in part from the fact that its such a family affair – Bebo was of course Chucho's father, and younger generations of the Valdés family are on hand too (Leyanis on piano, Jessie on drums). The other principal here, Arturo O'Farrill, is likewise celebrating his father, Chico, and has younger family members with him (Adam on trumpet and Zack on drums). There's also Anoushka Shankar, daughter of Ravi, joining the fun and providing a sitar solo on ‘Raja Ram’. And then, matters of bloodline aside, the music itself is so overwhelming. Disc one, performed with the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, is more lushly traditional in arrangement and tone, while the second set, featuring the leaner, post-boppish Third Generations Ensemble, is more progressive in temper.
