Here's a date that's huge in every way, as Cape Town-based drummer and composer Asher Gamedze leads his horn-heavy, 10-piece ensemble The Black Lungs through 81 minutes of soul-shaking music and poetry examining the ongoing struggles of the global dispossessed.

The centrepiece is the nearly 40-minute title track, which piles up grand swells of oceanic piano and churning percussion, creating a towering, free-form lament forever teetering on the very edge of taking form, and populated by lengthy, exploratory solos, with trombonist Athi Ngcaba taking a particularly forceful turn.

More concise excursions nail down a vibe of armour-plated, nocturnal swing with punchy horns, poet Fred Moten intoning serious verse, and rattling percussion summoning Kulu Se Mama-era John Coltrane.

Most transporting of all is the 16-minute ‘Determining Facts’, a fathomless modal anthem of operatic vocals and crushing Elvin Jones polyrhythms that evokes the consciousness-raising intensity of prime early-1970s Black Jazz cuts with grit and determination.

Following on from the success of last year's critically acclaimed Turbulence and Pulse, this is another major statement from an artist who's unafraid to take bold risks with enough power and depth to make Kamasi Washington look like Kool & The Gang.
