Bassist Rune Nergaard and drummer Gard Nilssen constitute the powerhouse rhythm section that drives jazz-rock monster trio Bushman's Revenge. With this new – and very aptly named – trio, they explore cosmic soundscapes of considerably more meditative intent, but which retain some of the retro, prog-informed approach of their more high-profile group. There's a languorous calm to much of this album: ‘Orbiter’ conjures rainy melancholy with watery Moog and a simple, laconic heartbeat; ‘Shoal’ mixes drifting tones with a restrained, shuffling click-clack rhythm; while ‘Analogue Karma’ overlays soporific, barely-there drums with wafting electronics and gritty Fender Rhodes, creating a moody anthem that tips its hat to Kid A-era Radiohead. Elsewhere, Nilssen gets his groove on: ‘No Satisfaction At All’ is juddering robot funk; and ‘The Electric Airbag Police’ pits a motorik rhythm against sci-fi whooshes and scuttling computer code. It could all be some far-future war between man and machine. Don't worry: it sounds like man is winning.
