The esteemed Brazilian jazz-funk trio Azymuth were founded back in 1973 and continue to this day, maintaining global renown with a sound – a mash-up of jazz, pop, samba, bossa, disco, psychedelia, electronica and MPB [musica popular brasileiura] – that drummer Ivan Conti famously nicknamed “samba doido” (“crazy samba”). Neither age nor line-up changes have wearied their prolific output, which since 1998 has been released on the London based label Far Out – whose success in repositioning Azymuth as dancefloor-savvy jazz godfathers has meant a relentless roll of re-issues including last year's Demos 1973-75, Vo¡s. 1&2, which sold out its initial print run. Now comes a further two tracks from the self-same batch, unearthed from hiding in Conti's private archive and dusted off as a postscript.

Both are fabulous. The first, an instrumental take on Roberto and Frasmo Carlos' 1969 Jovem Guarda hit ‘As Curvas da Estrada de Santos’ (a hit for Elis Regina a year later) finds Azymuth's late keyboardist Jose Bertrami wielding analogue synths, a Hammond, and a Fender Rhodes in ways moody and melodic. But it's the relatively unknown space-folk oddity ‘Zé e Paraná’, with the track's composer and guitarist João Paraná playing and softly vocalising alongside Bertrami, drummer Conti and Malheiros – unusually – on double bass that makes this a must-have. The slight hiss of the vintage recording only adds to the mystical vibe.
