Brazilian power trio Azymuth have been doing their funky, jazzy, crazy samba doido thing for five decades. One of their country's most successful exports, and with two founding members now in their seventies, they show no signs of slacking… even the death of their beloved genius keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami in 2012 has not withered them. After a respectful five year hiatus they‘re back with this fine 11-track journey, sticking closely to their ‘if it ain't broke’ maxim with original leftfield compositions that go right to the nub of their sparkling expressionist fusion. New recruit Kiko Continentino shows his colours on three self-penned tunes: ‘Igarupé’, ‘Orange Clouds’ and ‘Neptunians’, a head-nodder bolstered by Brazilian percussion legend Robertinho Silva. The title-track, a tribute to their former keyboardist, recalls their heady 1970s studios sessions, with Continentino and Silva letting rip (including the former on ‘Coder’), Malheiros slapping that ever-present bass and producer Daniel Maunik weighing in with some dreamy synth FX. A winner.
