I should have remembered that there was a cover version of ‘Un Poco Loco’ by Harris, a keen follower of Powell (and of Monk and Tatum). It was originally the closing item of this selection of tracks from a concert tour of Japan and if not as compelling as Powell's own version, partly because of the faster tempo, it's entirely typical of Barry. Apart from including Bud's ‘Dance Of The Infidels’ and two Harris compositions, the remainder of the LP and the bonus tracks here are standards that Powell also played, and Barry makes an effective job of creating his own interpretations while soloing convincingly in Bud's language. Sam Jones, with whom Harris worked briefly for Cannonball Adderley, is solid throughout and Williams, chiefly known for his playing with Harris, is exemplary as a dynamic but non-flamboyant drummer. This whole album is an excellent reminder that it's hardly surprising Harris is so revered and so effective as an educator in recent decades.
