The son of a sculptor and grandson of revue star Gertrude Lawrence, Clatworthy, born Hastings in 1955, leads something of a double life. Based these days in Los Angeles, this former Ronnie Scott pupil works around California but also makes an annual tour of the UK. Earlier releases have found him in the company of often stellar US-based musicians. Here, though, he's heard for the first time with his regular UK quartet in an agreeable six-track set which combines lengthy examinations of pop tunes alongside standards and a couple of originals. He opens with Marvin Gaye's title track, taken in elegiac fashion, Donaldson's assertive piano the standout. ‘Here There and Everywhere’ moves slowly, too, the accent on Clatworthy's yearning tenor tone, his exploration tentative yet probing, Donaldson and Thorpe similarly reflective. ‘Frank’s Tune', a Frank Strazzeri original, fairly sparkles, with Donaldson's splashy solo a reminder of his quality, Clatworthy going through the gears in fours with Home. ‘Danny Boy’ again emphasises the tenorist's lyrical approach, moving at languid pace, the solo thoughtful, before Donaldson's similarly ruminative sequence. The final piece, ‘Kandahar’, is Clatworthy's own, and has a suitably mystical feel, with a nice harmonic line, Clatworthy finding the edge, before Home has a prolonged thrash and the melody resumes. Not just another blowing session, this one deserves your attention.
