There’s a journey within this atmospheric album. It starts with the sound of someone walking into a forest, following a cuckoo’s call, and ends with them crossing shingle into lapping waves. There’s a real journey behind it, too: British percussionist Bex Burch, now Berlin-based, was invited to spend time in the US by International Anthem Records to meet and make music with like-minded musicians from their Chicago-based network. There Is Only Love And Fear is the impressive result of an apparent myriad of spontaneous collaborations whose diversity distils into a coherent sound portrait of Burch herself. There are grooves, of course, both straightforward and polyrhythmic, and moments of disruptive chaos but also reflective pieces. Above all there’s an attention to the subtleties of tones within percussion instruments and the sonic palette they offer, that reflects Burch’s insight as an instrument maker as well as composer and player.
