Other than a Record Store Day hype sticker, CrissCross offer no special explanation for this well-made, superbly-pressed and classy gatefold LP (it's appearing on vinyl for the first time). So, if ours is to reason why but not to know why, then let's just simply revel in the fact that it's here now.

Happily, the album's performances by Charlap and his illustrious companions fully justify the care given to its re-appearance. This was the trio's first album, their collective association continuing to the present day, with later albums on Venus, Columbia, Impulse! and latterly, Blue Note. Where once there were established trios like these – think Peterson or Cole – now there are merely impromptu or short-lived collaborations. so Charlap's threesome represent a welcome example of continuity.

And how well they meld together in this carefully selected programme of nine show songs. Charlap opens the title track with a lengthy, Tatum-like solo flourish before settling into an intricate improvisation that leaves the melody well behind, Kenny W slick on brushes. Berlin's ‘The Best Thing For You Would Be Me’ is less often heard, with Charlap's reading suggesting that he knows exactly how he wants it to go, his unfussy, technically adroit playing uppermost, the bass and drum breaks preceding a lively re-vamp of the theme. He's equally worthwhile on ‘Pure Imagination’ taken at a languid ballad tempo while ‘Nobody's Heart’ is like a swingy romp, nimble and quick-minded, these the responses of a true mainstreamer. No bebop here! George Shearing's notes comment on each piece in turn and he says the album is one of his most cherished possessions. Mine too, now.
