Suddenly, after nearly half-a-century with only one album from this short-lived line-up (At The Montreux Festival), Resonance has unearthed two sessions done in the following days – 2016's Reissue of the Year Some Other Time from Germany (see Jazzwise 207) and this from a Dutch radio studio. If there was any disappointment about the German set, it was the comparatively subdued contribution of DeJohnette, perhaps due to the fairly casual nature of the session itself. Here, by contrast, he makes his presence felt in the most positive way and becomes an appropriate counterweight to the impressively voluble Gomez (it's the audience which, if anything, is too subdued). Even though the playing time of less than 48 minutes is shorter than that of the other two albums, the good news is that there's relatively little overlap in the repertoire. The bass and drum features (‘Embraceable You’ and ‘Nardis’) are the same as at Montreux but nothing else, while only Evans's ‘Very Early’ and ‘Turn Out The Stars’ and Previn's ‘You're Gonna Hear From Me’ duplicate the German sessions. Needless to say, the actual performances are individual and highly rewarding.
