I blame Miles: just as Mike Stern still sports his curtains hair cut from his days with the Magus, so, if you believe the cover photo, Evans still privileges his bandana. But hellfire, if a sound and an image has served you well over the decades, why give up on a good thing, baby? Evans, of course, is a more diverse artist than this collaboration reflects – his bluegrass-jazz extravaganzas remain a most singular project while Tommy Smith's Scottish ensembles have wrought other subtleties from him. But for this baying German audience and the rambunctious WDR band he delivers what you'd expect: hi-energy sweat-some jazz rock. No surprise then that we kick off with ‘Big Fun, named after a Miles album, and a title that sums up this release. And, if you want to party, then Mbappe's your man to pump up the action. He lavishes on the funk throughout, breaking through Michael Abene's stolid arrangements which are set up to best exploit the star peoples' skills. Big Fun indeed, but maybe you had to be there to appreciate it most.
