The title says it all: that retro rocketeer Frisell has whizzed together songs that summon the spirit of adventure that was the 1960s space age. It takes off with a deliriously slowed ‘Pipeline’, goes into dreamy orbit with Brian Wilson's ‘Surfer Girl’ (Leisz's pedal steel drifting in from Venus, the planet of love), and hits escape velocity with a roogalating ‘Bryant's Boogie’. Of course, everyone will shout out for their own cosmic hit: wot, no ‘Space Cowboy’? Curiously, of all the influences on Frisell, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson isn't one that gets much billing. Unexpected treats are a gentle ‘Tired Of Waiting For You’ (never thought of Ray Davies in a space suit before), and of course it all wraps with ‘Telstar’. Guitar In The Space Age may not have the dark edge of Disfarmer, but it's not overcooked like the Floratone material. Perhaps a minor planet in Frisell's star studded recording firmament, but, like his Lennon project, Guitar In The Space Age is affable, affectionate and a baby boomer's joy.
