An old favourite for some listeners, and an unlikely curiosity for others. The leader, or perhaps producer Teo Macero, took the initiative of combining Brookmeyer's frequent colleague Getz and his then-vibist Burton with what looks like a contemporary Blue Note rhythm-section (cf. Shorter's Speak No Evil). That it doesn't quite sound like one is down to the fact that these expert professionals play to the strengths of the frontline and keep things on a fairly light-hearted level. Brookmeyer's humorous delivery and catchy originals (particularly ‘Jive Hoot’) inspire the other players while Getz, who was then represented on records by an avalanche of bossa nova, took the opportunity to play classic ballad-style improv on three standards. The take of Tony Bennett sitting in on another ballad (Ellington's ‘Day Dream’) wasn't released at the time, along with two further Getz-led instrumentals where Brookmeyer sits out, but their addition to the CD edition is hardly a disappointment.
