Bradford, now an octogenarian, is a trumpet and cornet player known for his work in the avant-garde, most notably with Ornette Coleman. This recording, for the Lithuanian NoBusiness label, finds him pushing boundaries in subtler fashion. He dips affectionately, and affectingly, in and out of the tradition, joined by Modirzadeh, a saxophonist and professor interested in ‘original cross-cultural musical concepts’ but here steering generally clear of so-called ‘world music’. The same ducking in and out of the tradition is evident in the rhythm section. Dresser, in particular, is known for his extended techniques, but he and Cline – brother of guitarist Nels Cline, and a collaborator with the likes of Don Preston, Henry Grimes, Charlie Haden and Wadada Leo Smith – can turn their hand to swinging ride cymbal and walking bass patterns too. The appropriately titled ‘Dresser Only’, meanwhile, is a reminder of the bassist's more unusual, and rightly celebrated, solo playing. All in all, a quietly strange and highly enjoyable take on bop and some of what has followed.
