In June 1991, American cornet player Bobby Bradford visited London to perform and record with his friend, UK drummer John Stevens. This live concert at the Albany is a rare survivor of that encounter, together with Norwegian sax player Frode Gjerstad and UK bass player Kent Carter who were members of Stevens’ Detail group at the time. Made up of three parts, Blue Cat is a fine example of Bradford’s cornet playing, a rich and earthy sound that is tempered with Gjerstad’s fluid sax treatments. To this is added Carter’s bold bass playing and Stevens’ mercurial drum and percussion injections, all of which helps to enhance the brassy blare of Bradford’s bluesy cornet. The third part of the concert is particularly solid; beginning with a playful call and response action between Bradford and Gjerstad, the piece slowly unravels into a riot of tightly packed improvised energy – where everything from half-remembered nursery rhymes to show tunes are dragged out and drowsily reassembled.
