It's only right that Hutcherson, who played such an important role in classic experimental albums of the 1960s with the likes of Eric Dolphy, should return to the Blue Note label, now headed by rock musician/producer Don Was, who produced this date. Possibly something more groundbreaking might have been expected, but what transpires is a totally relaxed four-way conversation between a bunch of A-grade musicians who had never played together as a group. Sanborn retains his totally original sound and approach, but proves he's also a very hip, very modern jazz soloist and fits like a glove with the always enthusiastic buoyancy of Joey DeFransesco. Hutcherson never tries to steal the limelight, his soft mallets, always harmonically tasteful and apt. As for Billy Hart – he really appears to have a new lease of life. Currently leading his own successful quartet on ECM, he's also responsible for being the boot behind David Weiss' group of veterans The Cookers (currently with Donald Harrison in the alto chair). You'll hear him at his very best, quietly (and bombastically, when necessary!) cooking behind Hutch, Sanborn and DeFrancesco. All seven tunes are originals – two by Sanborn, two by Joey, specially written for the session, and three by Hutch, including the haunting title track of his 1975 Blue Note album called ‘Montara’. A CD that grows on you and fits almost every mood.
