Throughout his career drummer-composer Previte has led a number of fairly unusually configured ensembles and this sextet is one of the most accomplished of his recent output. Though acoustic, there is a cleverly understated electric character to the group sound by way of the intermingling of Zeena Parkins' harp and Nels Cline's guitar, the combination of which produces fine sparkles and shimmers that work well when the arrangements take a turn towards Reichian counterpoint and whirring repetition in which Fabian Rucker's alto sax acts as a hefty anchor. There is a lightness of touch in the scoring that does not come at the expense of any solidity or backbone. The material, in any case, deals with the crucial contemporary issues of transit and migration, to which Previte, whose Sicilian grandmother was denied entry to America, is particularly sensitive, and the unsurprisingly poignant, reflective nature of the song cycle is enriched by provocative lyrics such as “a no man's land is where I'm from”. Jen Shyu's voice is deployed more conventionally than has been the case on her own albums, which is no bad thing at all, as at times she is slightly reminiscent of Kate Bush at her most experimental, lending this intricate work a common touch rather than crass commerciality. Another worthwhile entry in Previte's discography.
