In 1998, Stenson recorded War Orphans that began a run of sublime trio recordings, the first three with Jormin on bass and Jon Christensen on drums, Goodbye where Paul Motian replaced Christensen and Cantando from 2008 that introduced the talented young Swedish drummer Jon Fält. Indicum is of a piece with these albums, a logical continuum revealing artistic growth and inspired music making. Once again, Stenson selects a wide ranging choice of material, here from Bill Evans to George Russell, from Danish composer Carl Nielsen to Argentinean composer Ariel Ramírez, a Norwegian hymn and more. Yet despite this seemingly disparate choice of repertoire, Stenson makes the music his own with – apparently – the minimum of fuss, bringing each piece into his world of lyrical melodicism; where nothing is forced and is gracefully laid out before you with such clarity of thought it assumes a beauty and intensity that fails to diminish with repeated listening.
