Between 1993 and 2000, Bobo Stenson recorded a trilogy of albums with Jordan and Christensen – Reflections (1993), War Orphans (1997) and the two CD set Serenity (1969) – that number among the finest of all Scandinavian jazz recordings, and indeed of jazz itself. War Orphans takes the album title from Stenson's imaginative interpretation of the Ornette Coleman composition, its thoughtful, probing melodicism, gloved in a mood of reflective tranquillity something of a leitmotif that underpins the aesthetic of all three albums. Like Jan Garbarek, with whom he shared a close musical relationship in the 1970s, Stenson draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, but they ultimately become subordinate to each musician's overall style. Thus, an old Cuban favourite of Stenson's dating back to the 1970s, ‘Oleo De Mujer Con Sombrero’, is claimed by the pianist as his own musical property. It's a rare gift that few musicians possess.
