This project is the work of two high-flying educators and practitioners of modern music: pianist Roberts and singer Östblom, who have penned the songs on this EP (with some help from Hargreaves and Mullarkey). It’s as slick and sophisticated as one might hope, given the stated influences of Hancock, Shorter and the acid jazz movement of the 1990s, with all the rhythmic complexity that suggests.

Östblom describes what she does as ‘futuristic soul’, and there are obvious ‘urban’ elements to the music too. And although ‘boreal’ refers to the sub-arctic, the production has more of a lush, tropical vibe.

Östblom’s smooth, multi-tracked vocals contribute much to the 'Rolls-Royce' feel of this EP. She is an extremely versatile performer, who was recently featured on Alex Hitchcock’s live Dream Band album, while Roberts has worked with everyone from Dizzee Rascal to Jorja Smith.

Notable contributions are supplied by the stylish Billy Adamson (who appeared on Binker Golding’s last album) on ‘Horizon (Now Is the Time)’, and Emma Rawicz, whose solo on ‘Can We Take a Moment’ provides further evidence of her rapid ascent into the upper echelons of UK jazz.
