There's a danger of not taking Glasgow horn quartet Brass Jaw seriously enough. Perhaps that's partly because they're so good-humoured, both personally and musically. But principally it's because they're such an extremely portable act – no drums or piano or even double bass to lug around – so they're able to do brisk dashes around the likes of the London Jazz Festival, playing here, there and seemingly everywhere at once. Ubiquity and ease of access – not to mention good humour – can result in being taken for granted, which is the opposite of what this three-saxes-and-a-trumpet combo deserves. As well as being brilliant ambassadors for jazz as a live act, they've put out a series of increasingly accomplished albums that make for engrossing listening. Minted, their fourth and best yet, showcases catchy, harmonically rich writing as well as some sublime playing. The overall tone remains characteristically upbeat, as suggested by titles such as ‘I Can Hear Your Smile’ and ‘Sunny’, but there's plenty of variety, with hints of astringent modernism and some fine gospel-inflected playing on the impassioned closer, ‘Charles Franklin Blues’, which also features a guest spot for trombonist Michael Owers.
